Store sheep sale 6,233 – sold

Auctioneers: John Rossiter 07557 392903 & James Cook-O’Connell 07712246474.

Report on trade: The largest entry of lambs, so far, this season which coincided with the annual show and sale of ewe lambs. Just under 7,000 sheep went under the hammer. Following a few weeks of resistance from away buyers due to the current potential risks of purchasing sheep in the South East, this seems to have switched to a desire for purchasing sheep due to the potential risk of not being able to buy them in the coming months. This week’s store lambs offering was a little more mixed, with more stronger lambs selling at over £100 head but also several pens of longer terms types on offer which lowered the average of £95 all inclusive. Several buyers came for lambs and didn’t even get started this week which shows good signs for the coming weeks sales. Top on the day was Matthew Wickens with Texel crosses at £119 head.

Over 2,000 ewe lambs were on offer on the day with the star run once again produced by D Howard Farms who penned 400 lambs on the day and took first prize in the Suffolk Mule class which sold for £156 head, and the whole run averaged £147. H J Hecks also showed a super run of lambs and topped at £146 head, with M A & FW Owen topping at £136 head. Pretty much all ewe lambs were over £100 with lambs of quality more suited to retaining for breeding over £120 head. The overall entry averaged £124 head for all ewe lambs offered.

Today was our first large entry of breeding sheep with a good show of both tegs and breeding ewes to suit a wide variety of customers. To kick off the tegs was G Nairn with Texel crosses to £172, with B D Wheeler selling Texel x Mules to £205. We had our regular entry of Suffolk x Mule tegs from J P M Rural Services which were in strong demand with the best to £228, and again at £210. The breeding ewes saw a few flock dispersals with the first from Mr G Tucker selling superb purebred flock age Charollais ewes to £230, and 2 lamb Texel cross ewes from the same home to £156. The second dispersal was for Kingswood Farm which were Mule ewes with the 1 lambers to £162 and 2-3 lambers to £139, followed by the rams topping at £180.

This day also held a big flock reduction on behalf of Langrish Farmers of Texel cross tegs and ewes, with the tegs to £175. However, the ewes were what people were really waiting for with a fantastic trade for these from start to finish with the main bulk of these £130 – £160. The 1 lambers topped at £170, and again at £164; the 2 lamb ewes topped at £149 with the 3 lambs ewes topping at £136.

This was a very positive start to the autumn breeding sheep sales so if you have any breeding sheep to sell whether it be Rams, Ewes or Tegs then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
