Store sheep sale 6,627 – sold

Report on trade: Considering what we now know to be our current situation Friday was a wonderful sale! Trade was very strong for all lambs on offer with the average of well over 6,000 head of lambs returning at £93 all included. West Country buyers were out in force for the stronger lambs of all breeds. Suffolk Mule wethers made up the bulk of the sale with well over 2,000 on offer which averaged £102 head, most definitely as high as we have seen them. Possibly, with the risk hanging over the future sales (which now has unfortunately come true), this created a panic buy situation and boosted prices. What will happen going forward is still an unknown, but people want sheep, and numbers are short! Borders are always awkward!
Looking ahead, we will go ahead with this Friday’s sale on September 20th, but we will now only be able to sell lambs to holdings in the restricted zone. We do still anticipate a good demand for lambs, but the trade will be unknown until the day. The decision to sell or not will always lie with the vendor, but we are able to offer this option to be able to sell, which is a luxury that must not be taken for granted following the experiences of many in East Kent last year. Sheep from outside the zone can enter the sale but cannot return home.
Another seasonal entry of breeding sheep with Suffolk x Mule ewe tegs really ringing the bell with best tegs to £222 from Dan Mackelden Ltd. Suffolk x Mules tegs from Mr J Taylor to £212 and Mules from N Beesley to £190, with majority of the tegs £175 – £200 throughout.
Breeding ewes saw a flock dispersal from S E Lane & Partners with their Romney ewe tegs to £140 and Romneys flock aged ewes to £133. A further flock dispersal from GHE of Suffolk x Mule flock aged ewes to £128 and the majority of the others on the day £100 – £130.
Breeding sheep are a strong trade so please do get them booked in for the coming weeks.
