Romney Day
Store sheep sale 3,682 – sold
Auctioneers: John Rossiter 07557 392903 & James Cook-O’Connell 07712246474.
Report on trade: Romney day this year was held under different and more challenging conditions than we have seen in recent years. The trade was certainly, what we would describe as “challenging”. This is no fault of the sheep themselves, nor the vendors, but the movement restrictions imposed following the BTV outbreaks that have limited the number of “away” customers we can sell sheep to. Romney day is usually supported by buyers from far West of us, and into Wales, and obviously these customers could not attend. Despite all these issues, the day was still a success with the better end of the ewe lambs still over £120 head and many of the smaller types selling on a trade comparable with the store market. Top on the day was H Metcalf with strong ewe lambs to £125 head with the show winners from Langrish Farmers selling to £113 head.
Breeding Rams
Champion Ram – A Barr & Son – £800
A large entry of rams on offer this year and the appetite for the pedigree rams was strong with an average price of £450 returned. Less flocks are now breeding the pedigree sheep, and this is certainly helping to keep prices up. However, there were fewer customers this year due to the Blue Tongue restrictions. Top price on the day went to the HV Link Partnership at £900.
A big show of Romney tegs with just over 1,450 in the pens. A wide variation in size and quality. First prize was given to G Homewood for a strong pen of tegs which topped the day at £170, were bought by the judge, J Lukehurst. Second prize went to Stone Farms at £168, and third prize went to C Rayner at £161. There were some terrific tegs in the pens with the best £150 – £170, second quality £130 – £145 but with very few sold below the £130 mark.
The breeding ewe section saw a small entry of 400 ewes in the pens and plenty of buyers forward. A flock dispersal from B J Barker saw their 1 lamb ewes to £136 and their 2 lamb ewes to £135. M L & M P Holgate sold 3 lamb ewes to £128 while both Langrish Farmers and R Mair & Son had 4 lamb ewes to £95.
Upcoming breeding sales on both 4th and 11th October so please get in touch if you have breeding sheep to sell.
