Store sheep sale 5,750 – sold

Auctioneers: John Rossiter 07557 392903 & James Cook-O’Connell 07712246474.

Report on trade: A bigger entry this week with just under 6,000 sheep penned on the day. Store lambs, ewe lambs, shearling ewes, breeding ewes and rams all on the one day made for a busy morning sorting but we got there in the end! The trade for store lambs lifted on the previous sale but quality was stronger than the two weeks earlier. The trade is still difficult to sustain with the restrictions on movement around the country still in place, but despite this we are seeing a very acceptable trade for the store lambs on offer. There is a two, or maybe even a three tier, trade with strong and forward lambs selling form £90-110 head and on a similar level to anywhere else in the country. The next grade down in the lambs is, generally, trading from £75-90 and is also showing little signs of impact from the restrictions. Unfortunately, the tier that is most effected by the current situation is for the smaller, and very much longer term lambs, of which there are still quite a considerable number coming forward. With the current weather conditions and market outlook, buyers are opting to pay a bit more and take a few more of the stronger lambs that are on offer. Top spot on the day was a superb pen of continental cross lambs from Maytham Wharf which sold to £120 head.

Trade remains firm as we start to see fewer breeding sheep in the pens as is to be expected with rams going in, if not already in, depending on your system. Strong Romney ewe tegs from A R Dunlop to £172 with Romney ewe tegs from P H & P E Skinner to £140. Smart Texel ewe tegs from G Husk to £180, and Mules ewes tegs from Shabden Park Farm to £162.

The breeding ewe section was busier than it has been with a top call going to G Husk for Texel flock ages to £150. Poll Dorset ewes from Washbrook Farm to £109 and a flock reduction from Stilwell Farms saw Lleyn crosses to £111, with the others £90 – £110 from the same home.

Please do not hesitate to get in contact if you have breeding sheep to sell in the coming weeks.

We had our final sale of breeding rams with a great trade and a wide selection of breeds to suit every buyer. Top call went to J Coe with their Charollais shearlings to £720 and £640 followed by C F Fuggle with Texel shearlings to £620 and majority of the run £550 – £600. Beltex x Texel shearling from C A Worley Farming to £420 and a smart Beltex shearling from T Lyle & Partners to £400. Suffolk shearlings from R Partridge & Son to £380 and Blue Texel x Suffolk shearlings from the same home to £520. Romney shearling were plentiful with the top call £400 from N A Balcomb & Son with majority of the other Romney rams £150 – £300 on the day. Aged rams from C F Fuggle to £620 and £570 for Texels with others £120 – £250 on most occasions with only very few sold under these figures.
